suzuki generator surging

Hi there, I bought a suzuki generator at a garage sale. It had old gas, and the carb was missing some pieces. I drained the gas, changed the carb, and it runs now. Only problem is that at idle, the unit surges. The mechanical govenor keeps having to compensate for the bad running. It seems to run when the choke is on, but not smooth. It can hold a load, and seems to surge with or without a load. I am not much of a mechanic, but I would appreciate any advice that may help me with my generator problems-

Thank you

David

Some times hooking the lightest spring you can find between your throttle plate and the governor arm will take care of the slight lost motion that can cause a surge, I often use some of the light springs found on B/S throttle/governor set ups with good results.

Dave - As Don suggests in his reply, having the carb adjusted slightly lean can cause surging at no load - I'd be looking at that first. Likewise governor linkage adjustment to reduce sensitivity (if adjustment possible) may be required.

However it's been my experience many of these small generators tend to surge under no load even when properly adjusted. It's the downside of having the governor sensitive enough to minimize droop (loss of RPM) between light load and full load.

There are basically two possibilities. If the carburetor mixture is incorrect, especially too lean, the engine will be sluggish to respond to the governor, the governor will move more, and finally the engine will try to catch up and will overshoot the set speed. For good governor performance the engine must first run well at all speeds and loads. The other, probably more likely, possibility is that in changing the carburetor you have upset the governor to carburetor linkage. If the carburetor throttle moves too much for a certain governor movement, the same overshoot and surging will result. If there are more than one hole in the throttle or governor levers, moving the link toward the governor lever shaft or away from the throttle lever shaft will make the governor less sensitive and reduce surging. Some systems have special sensitivity or damping adjustments for this.
Hope this helps.
