H electrical conversion

The schematic diagrams I have seen show the battery to be a negative ground when using an alternator with a magneto system and a positive ground with the generator/regulator system. Before I saw these diagrams I had the positive groud and the tractor turned over just fine. Wouldn't fire but it turned over.

I have to assume the drawings are correct. OK, what have I damaged? There was no arcing once I got all the connections cleaned and tight.

Secondly, where is the condensor located on the mag system? Is it inside the mag unit itself? If so, how do I get to it?

Thanks

Mike: (1)The starter doesn't care if you are using Pos. or Neg. ground; it will crank faster with 12 volts compared to 6 volts.
(2) The magneto doesn't care what voltage or ground you are using; it is totally isolated from the rest of the electrical system. The switch only acts as a ground to shut off the spark production process. The condenser is inside the magneto housing; get a manual and start taking it apart.
(3) The charging and ignition system ARE fussy as to voltage and grounding. (4) You are not telling us what your ignition or charging systems are. More info needed to help much more.
(5) Go to the Farmall forum and you will get a lot more responses and you should try the Archives section on the left side of this page for more comments from the past. You are not the first one with these questions.

Wayne, you have given the best answers I can find in any of archives. The tractor I am working on now has a magneto and I think I understand the concept now why the alternator plays no part in the stating of the engine. I would think I don't even have to have it hooked up at all to start and run the tractor.

However, I do need it if I am going to use the lights or do anything to drain the battery? At this point I'd just like to get he tractor runnning. The other question I have is locating the condensor. I can find no obvious condend=sor and only can assume it is inside the Magneto housing.
