E elctrical conversion.

In the wiring schematics I have seen the generator/rgulator system has Positive ground. Alternator system has Negative ground. I assume the alternator must us negative ground for some reason. What damage did I do by turning engine over with Positive ground hooked up to magneto system?

Also, where is the condensor located in the magneto system?

all alternators are negative ground. most tractors prior to 1965 were positive ground. If the original tractor was 12 volt and has positive ground, you can just switch the battery terminals and make it negative ground. starter and lights dont know the difference. If it was 6 volt to start with, you will need a different coil, if distributor equipped. If you have a magnito, it does not use the battery. There may be a terminal on the side of the mag. If you ground it, the spark stops and motor will not start. Make sure you have no wire on the maginito to get it started. To stop, you have a "kill button" that grounds the mag.

Just to add to Steves post,if your machine has an amp guage and you convert from positive to negative ground you need to switch all wires side to side on the amp guage posts to make it read correctly. The condenser in a magnito is usually inside the magnito case.

Jon, I appreciate the input. Now, how do I get it out. There are two terminals on the post. I can get them loose and out of the way but the condensor will not pull free. Is it simply that it's tight, or is there a trick to removing it from the mag?

Also is there a way to check to see if the Mag is generating a charge--short of holding on to a wire while I turn the engine over? Wife won't hold it either!

I have limited experience with mags so I cant be much help on removing the condenser. A good mag should make atleast 1/4-1/2 inch spark to most any metal on the tractor. About 30-40,000 volts,I won't hold the wire either. :)

Thanks for all the good info. I am just going through the same scenario with a Farmall 450 Gas w/ a positive ground. You guys just answered all my questions of how the conversion is done.

A magneto makes its own power and is NOT connected to the charging system. so you should have no damage to the magneto.
