Ok, my class is building a gokart that uses a generator... There are 2 fields the A and the F, we hooked power up to the A field and the starter motor ran. Then we hooked it up to the F field and we saw little voltage generated after we turned it. We then hooked it up to a 12v battery to try and charge it, but then the voltage in the battery slowly decreased. Could you please help us with our project.

Thanks
Kyle

Kyle,

If you have a DR generator [is it a 2 brush or 3 brush generator?] and you want to use a 12 volt battery, you may need an alternator. I know that most of the 6 volt battery systems used a generator and cut-out-relay. Allen C. amy be able to comment further...

good luck

I assume you want to use it as a motor. To run the generator you put power to the A (armture) as you described, but you will likely find that you have to ground the F terminal (that' for "field")
When using a generator for charging - it's usual job, the regulator controls the charging rate by the field terminal and the A goes to the battery through the cutout.

Hello...

2 questions:
1) Where can we get a regulator?
2) What is the cutout?

Thanks
Kyle

You only need a regulator if you are using it for charging. They can be bought new at napa or similar stores yet, or, if low cost is all important a tractor wrecker should have lots of them. The cutout is part of the regulator, it is a relay that disconnects the generator from the circuit when it is not running so that it doesn't try to "motor" which would damage the generator and kill the battery.
