Someone with a 1940's Cletrac HG close to this guy help him find what he needs or loan him a starter to see if it would fit. Couldn't find a listing for it in books.

Are you sure it is a Continental? Most Cletracs had a Hercules or Buda. Most Continentals would have a tag on side of the engine block giving the model number. You will need this to match up something out here. I could find something in my books if you had the number of the engine. Some Continentals used some odd mounting starters that will fit nothing else.

its a continel but from what a guy told me hes a fork lift guy its bolted up to the hercules bell houseing the tag is gone if it where still there I probably won't have this problem the starter that was on it was a rigged boat motor starter and of course it was not big enough to hold up so I'm trying to get the right thing or at least as right as it can be this thing would run and do work if I had a way to start it

Ok, knowing it is Continental or a cross of sorts with Hercules. What model Cletrac is it? A F model? I have some reference guides listing Cletracs and engines used but it doesn't give the model of the engines, only brands and 4 or 6 cylinders. Shows some Cletracs using their own engine. One wonders what these really were. Would help me know where to start looking in books. Probably a Autolite/Prestolite or Delco but have several books 8" + thick to look through. Some continental engine info is available from continentalengines.com but doubt they have starter info for this. The Cletrac model would give me a place to start.

That helps narrow it down Rich. Will check the books and email you later this evening with some info. You can do a web search on "old cletrac crawlers" and find a lot to look at. Found the chart I had seen before on Cletrac and there is some more links there for you to look at. I didn't look at all of them yet. Maybe someone else can be found with a Cletrac like yours and we can find out what starter is on theirs. The charts are still just showing the HG, HGF, & HGR with a Hercules? The Continental F124 was used in a lot of forklifts as was the F164 which was also on some welders too.

A really good starter repair shop, with a knowledgable employee willing to take a little time to help you, ought to be able to match something up by dimensions. You may even get lucky and they'll have an old book lying around that they can do it by application. We've matched up some oddball stuff over the years off old heavy equipment this way, but the place we use all the time is excellent both in customer service and in the quality of their repairs. When you get into equipment that's that old, there weren't nearly as many choices, by mfg or by size/style, as there are nowdays so it shouldn't be that hard to find a match. Good luck in your search.
