I started working on a John Deere 110 the other day, Kohler 8 horse, K181s. It was burning oil and it needed new rings. So I pulled the piston and all, honed the cylinder walls, installed the new rings, lapped the valves while I had it apart, and carefully put it all back together per the instructions of the online repair manuals at www.kohler.com. Well now the engine is so darn tight that the starter won't even crank it over...the tires slide when I try to pull start it (no matter how much weight is added)...we even hooked it up to a tiller and attached a belt and that's the only way we can get the motor to spin. What's wrong here? I know I didn't end up with any spare parts...and I put together everything paying attention to the little details. I'd appreciate any advice you might have on this matter. Please email me, as I will forget to check this. Thank you for your time.

Hello. I remember the instructions on the rod cap were to make sure that the oil hole faced the camshaft, and that's what I did. As for ring gap, I'm not sure I follow. They are new rings, standard sized. We honed it, and I think Dad said something about he bored it .005 over or something like that.

place ring only squarely in cylinder..place a feeler gauge between the ends of the ring..should have .003" clearance per inch of bore..joe
