I just got a 1951 cub I rebuilt the carb and cleaned the gas tank. Now it pures like a kitten but when I put it in gear it idles down real low like it wants to stall in 1st and 2nd but it does stall in 3rd it also stalls if you engage the pto. Please let me know what I need to do to correct this problem?

Hi Jason,

I would suggest you to check if the governor functions properly. Maybe there is something stuck because when the engine goes under load, the governor will open the carb butterfly in order to maintaint correct engine speed.

Jason, I had a similar problem with a '57 cub I just bought. I put in new plugs, points, condenser, rotor & cap and the tractor has never run better. I also cleaned and adjusted the carb but I was still losing power and stalling. Prior to the tune-up I couldn't engage the mower or run in 3rd without stalling but now I have power to spare. FYI NAPA had all the parts I needed in stock.

You may still have carb problems the mian jet may not be cleaned out good or not set open enough, try adjusting it open a little more. What works well but is unsafe is to have someone walk beside it and adjust it when its in gear. But as I said it is not very safe if you do this make sure who ever is on the tractor keeps his eyes open and can stop it on a dime and give you back 9 cents.
hope this helps
