I've taken the nose piece off & have a funky looking 3 bolts on the top plate of the steering gear. Do I use a large screwdriver to remove these? Once steering shaft is pulled back, unbolt the dash assy & does the hood/tank come off straight up?

I have a 1948 A also the funny bolts you speak of are called clutch head bolts some auto parts stores can get you the right screw driver for them their are two sisees but do not know what they are called the tin work on the 48 and mabe the 49 had thoes bolts and then deere changede back .If you ask somebody on the jd board for the web sight for corect conection { do not have at work and know computor at home and will be on vacaytion next week }they will have them loose or in a compleat kit with nice ruber bushings so the tin does not shake a part IF you are doing a fit and finish expo corect tractor. I do not belong to the corect police but did mine to expo standards be couse thats just me If you do a photo search under howard malon 1948 A it should come up any way ? #2 the hood and tank do come strait up over the air stack and mufler if tank is empty one large pearson can do it by your self {6foot three with long arms but was hard to people alot lot easer hope this helps happy tractoring howard.
