Heli-Coil Specs???

I have just discovered a situation on the belly of my IH 300 utility that looks like it may require some heli-coil work, which I have never done before. The "ball clamp" at the rear of the front axle "wishbone" is mounted with three 1/2" bolts through a bracket into holes in the casting on the belly of the tractor. One of those holes was drilled out once upon a time and tapped for a 9/16" bolt -- but the bracket was never drilled to accept the larger bolt. That may be because that bracket is VERY hard, or because the bigger hole would leave very little margin of steel at the edge of the bracket.

If I want to use heli-coil to restore the hole to the original 1/2", what size hole would I drill before installing the 1/2" heli-coil. I'm trying to figure out whether the larger hole drilled before rules out using the heli-coil.

Any other tips you can offer to a novice on installing the heli-coil, assuming that 9/16 tapped hole doesn't rule it out?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

1/2-13 tap drill size is 27/64. 9/16-12 tap drill size is 31/64. The 1/2-13 coil insert uses tap drill 17/32, which is larger than 31/64. Probably can drill the hole with 17/32, tap for the 1/2-13 coil insert and all will be fine. If the existing hole is too large for the 1/2 size coil insert, A TE-CO insert with outside threads of 3/4-10 and internal of 1/2-13 can be used if there is enough area to accept the 21/32 tap drill for the 3/4-10.

BD: Turns out my current hole is tapped for 5/8", making it too big for heli-coil. So I'm interested in alternatives such as you suggest.

I'm afraid I've never heard of a TE-CO insert. What are they and where might I buy them.

Thanks very much for your help.

Bob

Bob,
A different method that I have used before that has worked well is to drill the cast to the correct size for a cast iron pipe plug, clean it and the threads good and tighten it well then grind it off flush. Drill a new hole and tap it for the correct size. Make sure the cast iron plug is solid and not hollow. John

This site has some pictures about using helicoils for a manifold bolt repair so might give you some info about the 'how' part -
www.atving.com/editor/techtips/techtip13.htm

Afraid I can't help on the drill size, etc - I've been lucky for a while and haven't used them in some time - but I do remember the 'kit' listed drill sizes, etc. on the package so if no one knows maybe a trip to an auto parts house could give you the size info from the package.

Good luck,
Bob

Largest I have used is 3/8, and I used the drill that was specified in the kit (or did it come with the kit?). I don't personally know what size to use for a 1/2 inch helicoil, but when I did a Google search for "helicoil drill size", I found a table that says use a 33/64 drill. Sounds like if you have already drilled it for a 9/16 thread, you might be okay, as that shoulda been 31/64.
