Bob, (or anyone else that might know): I got your name from someone on the message board who indicated that you may be able to help us. We are trying to wire a delco remy alternator on the Farmall C. We are converting from a 6 volt to a 12 volt and we are in need of help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Judy,

Do you know if the alternator you have a Delco 10SI with an internal voltage regulator? There are two basic versions of this very common alternator; a one wire, so called and a three wire one. The three wire one will have two spade terminals on the side for a plastic plug-in connection in addition to the main output stud. While the three wire unit is only a little more complicated to wire up than the one wire version, it will begin charging at a lower operating speed. This is important with retrofits to old, low speed tractors.

If this is the type of alternator you have, the output stud gets connected directly to battery positive and the two spade terminals get connected as indicated in this post of mine.

Probably the cleanest way to do it is have a self exciting regulator installed at a starter generator shop or you can buy them almost anywhere anymore. Then all you have to do is hook up a wire to the post on the back of the generator and thats all you need it excites itself !! The wire would need to go to the gauge first and the other side of the gauge to your battery source .
