Hey guys, I wired up a alt to my 9n tractor. Started and ran fine ,but charged at about 17.50 volts. Went to shut it off and it kept running. So i removed the positve cable...and it still ran. So finally i removed the second wire that hooks up to the main + stud on the alt and it finally shut off.Now it starts up and charges about 13.25 and everything is fine .Does that second wire need to be hooked up? And also, is the + stud on the alt stay constantly hot? Thanks for any information. 9n ford fan

You evidently have a one wire alternator, with these once activated do not require the pigtail wires connected. The main terminal is always hot.On the standard alts 12v stud and #2 pin are hooked together and #1 used to activate the alt by connecting to ign or coil. Link below has some diagrams.

Its a 3 wire delco?? if so the + wire big stud on the alternator stays hooked up at all times, and the field wire the F termanal on the thing should go to the switched side of the switch/key, But on some of them you need to have a diode in the wireing to keep it from back feeding the coil. Others can tell you more and maybe explain it better
