I have a 18 HP Kohler Magnum engine that needs to be rebuilt. I live in New Hampshire. Can anyone recomend a company that can rebuild it for me? It threw a rod and blew a hole in the starter side of the block. Spec number is 24599 if anyone has one they want to sell.

Thanks
Dennis

A new 18hp Kohler is $1220 at Northern Tool, A 24hp Honda is $1170. I doubt if you can get yours repaired for much less than that. The crank may be damaged along with the piston, rod and block. As others said, Kohler parts are high.

Thanks for the reply Slowpoke. Do you or anyone else that's reading this post know what's so special about a 24599 spec # engine that makes it different from other engines other than the shaft size? I know this engine has some pretty elaborate sheet metal duct-work on the outside but I could always take that off my old engine and put it on the new one. Are there any internal differences or different base bolting patterns between spec numbers?

Go to Google and put in Kohler Engines. You can find dealers by your zip code. Sorry, I don't know anything about the Magnum engines.

If you get it rebuilt, get an absolute not-to-exceed bid first -- no blank checks! The Kohler is a great engine, but the parts prices are out of sight. A while back I rebuilt a two-cylinder opposed Kohler and a set of rings were $37 -- not for both pistons, but for only one! (A set of rings for both pistons on a 60 year old John Deere with a 7" bore were less than $30, as I recall.) Other parts, gaskets and such were also outrageously high. Once you throw in labor and your crankcase problem, you might want to think on getting a new engine.

I think you're right George. I short block is what I'll probably have to buy.

Have you checked with one of the local small engine repair shops? They should be able to give you an estimate on the cost for rebuilding the engine.

Where in NH are you at? I was at Pease AFB from Feb 86 to May 88. It was my first assignment and I wasn't real crazy about the place at the time. Would be more than willing to go back there if it was still open. Some of the best fishing I have ever done was there in New Hampshire and Maine.

later days mate,
Jim

Hello Jim Thanks for the reply to my post. I live about 15 miles north of the old Pease air base(Rochester). Pease is now "Pease International Tradeport" and is busier than ever. It is a commercial airport and is home to several large businesses and the NH Air National Guard. I have been having trouble locating anyone in my area that does complete rebuilds on small engines. I can get a short block from several sources but the price is way out of my budget. Dennis
