I have an old Briggs & Stratton engine that my brother is trying to repair for me. Model #19FB Type 706511. SN# 618028. My brother tells me that he needs a new exhaust valve but can not locate one. I have a Service Manual for "Out of Production Engines 1919-1981". The book is somewhat helpful, but I need to get a specific part number for the exhaust valve we need. The book talks about Cobalite valves, is this a good replacement valve? Any help is certainly appreciated. This engine is for my 1960 Jim Dandy.--JPM

The model #19 is not all that old (relatively speaking). Parts should be easy to get right through a Briggs and Stratton dealer. Models 14, 19, 190000, and 200000 all use the same exhaust valve components. Don't worry about outdated terminology from manual reprints, e.g. "cobalite." Engines came with standard or heavy duty exhaust valve setups. Heavy duty part numbers for the #19 series are: Stellite exhaust valve - 26735, rotator cap - 292260, keepers - 68283, spring - 26828 The parts numbers I just gave you are for a valve rotator cap that is held on with two split keepers. A standard,non-heavyduty valve might be held in by a little pin instead.

John, I cannot help you find an orignal B&S valve but I can offer you this suggestion...measure the stem dia. and valve length and buy a valve the correct length then just machine the valve to the correct head dia. I build lots of B&S kart racing engines and machine valves everyday. Almost any automotive machine shop or B&S dealer can get you a valve that will work..
hope this is of some help..
best wishes

Can this idea work on tractor and industrial engine valves also? Do you turn the valves to size in a lathe or grind them on a valve grinder?

Depending on valve material yes.....I use both a valve grinder and lathe.
The valves in my to35 are actually stainless chevy valves I cut down.
On the B&S engines the exhaust valve dia. is just under 1 inch...I take big head stainless chevy valves and cut the head dia. down to match.
The stem under the head is quite large and a wider V shaped...thus increasing port flow with less turblance.
