I have a 1950 B that i restored. It has new rings, and gaskets. When it is running it smokes black like it is getting to much fuel, so i adjusted the carb like the manual says, but then it misses like it is not getting enough fuel. It very often fouls plugs also. I have tried everything.

Ya, I know what you mean. I had one that would hit and miss. Never could get it to run on more than a couple of cylinders. I tried everything I could think of. Never did get it figured out. I just gave up.

How long has it been since your rebuild? After you rebuilt the engine did you take the old girl out in the field and "pull her ears back" and make her grunt for a while? If not your rings may have not seated in properly. Between the black smoke and the fouling that sounds to me like what has happened. Usually a gasoline engine will smoke white and you can smell the excess gas pretty strong when it's running rich. The black/blue smoke usually denotes burning oil, which would be the cause of your fouling on the plugs. Rings not seating is common on any engine if it isn't worked enough to seat the rings before being used for "puttering around" like alot of restored machines are used for. Something else that can cause the same problem, and still involving the rings is you may have put the oil control rings on upside down. Some rings can be put on either side up, and some can't. I don't know for sure about yours, maybe somebody else on here has build the same engine and will know for sure, but I have seen that happen too. With the wrong side up the ring isn't shaped properly to scrape the oil off the cylinder wall and back down into the oil pan. Instead it scrapes it upwards where it gets into the compression rings and eventually into the combustion chamber. Usually the rings will have a dimple, paint mark, etc on them to denote the top, and there is often an instruction sheet in with the ring set, if they came as a set that is. Without a sheet and if your not looking for it, it is really easy to miss this unless your really familiar with building engines and know to look. Good luck with the old girl. I hope this isn't the problem, but that's what the symptoms lead me to believe. Happy New Year. Wayne
