If there are no instructions packed with the new rings, contact the seller, and get a copy of the sheet THAT SHOULD HAVE COME WITH THE RINGS!

It's better to get it right the first time, and, normally, piston ring sets DO come with an instruction sheet.

Hey F-20, I haven't built a Farmall engine, but in all the others I've done the silver collered rings are usually gonna be the fire rings and will go in the top groove. The black ones will go in the next two and the oil control rings go in the bottom one. Before you put them in though look at each ring very closely since often they can be put in upside down. If there is a top and bottom the rings will be marked somehow. 99% of the time it's usually in the form of a dimple, a hash mark, or a colored paint mark of some kind on the top side of the ring. If there isn't any kind of mark then the ring should be able to be installed either way unless you have a manual or something telling you specifically to look for before installing them. I do know sometimes oil control rings will have a beveled edge and a square edge on the OD, in this case the beveled edge will go up and the square down, this way the ring slides over the oil film going up and the square edge catches it on the way down like it should. Too sometimes the fire ring will be silver on one side and black on the other. In this case normally the silver side will go to the top. Hope this helps. Good luck, Wayne

Wayne has it right. I would add thatI was taught when there is no dot or mark to designate the top, an inside bevel or notch goes up and an outside notch or bevel goes down on any ring, top middle or bottom, which is just a tad different than Waybe stated.

Hey Butch, I'm 99.9% sure on the bevel deal, but you've got me wondering now.... I'll check tomorrow and be 100% sure. I have been known to have one of those "DUH HUH" moments every once in a while and I'd hate to give somebody the wrong information.

I checked today and what I found was like Bob said, a ring set should come with instructions. I didn't actually find a definitive guide anywhere but from what I did find both me and Butch are right. On a compression ring a bevel on the OD would go down and on the ID it would go up. On the OD this keeps the pressure of compression from having a place to push on and force the ring away from the cylinder wall. On the ID it would do just the opposite and allow the pressure to push it against the wall. Now on an oil control ring, it would be installed like I said with the square edge down on the OD so it grabs and wipes the oil down, like it's supposed to, while riding over the oil film on the way up with the bevel. Again there should be some kind of instruction sheet or at least a set of markings but barring that, this is as close as I could come to a rule-of-thumb guide. Hope this clears up any confusion... Wayne
