O.K . I've got a Continental F163 that goes on a lincoln welder. It's a 4 cylinder, L head and it has a Fairbanks magneto on it. I converted it to a 12 volt coil igniton by removing the mag coil and connecting the 12 volt coil's output.Of course I also wired the primary to the points\with condenser. NOW guess what?! It cranks easily, and runs great, and no missing! BUT.... GUESS WHAT ELSE .... I have fluctuating voltage spikes from 12.5V to 40+ V...and it's not the alternator because I disconnected it and re-crank it and got the same test results at the battery. O.K. SOmebody tell me how to stop the fluctuations, or at least what cause them and if they are harmful(which I believe they are)to my voltage reg, alternator, idle speed control circuit board, and last but not least my battery.

THANKS. TCD

If you are using a digital voltmeter, especially a lower priced unit, the meter may be picking up electrical noise and not reading correctly. This is a common problem when using digital meters around engine electrical systems.

Try using an analog meter. If the unit is running well, and the battery is staying charged, and not boiling over, I'd say all is probably well. If you try an analog meter, and get voltage fluctuations with that, check all your connections, especially your battery ground wire to the frame of your unit.

HEY MAN I appreciate that iNfo. Your analogy is correct. I placed my volt meter into a coffe can (while the engine was running,of course) and the fluctuations stopped. When I take it out it begans to fluctuate as before.

Thanks, TCD

Well, some "fixes" are easier than others. Glad that helped you out!
