1964 Briggs 5hp, muffler very stuck! Removal?

I have a 1964 (I believe... possibly a little older) horizontal shaft Briggs motor that was on a snowblower back in the day. I'm trying to rebuild it as a fun project... but I have walked away very angry several times!

The muffler on it was a long can looking one. It is the 1" diameter (I think) threaded kind.

I have destroyed the muffler (well, the whole bottom had rotted off already...) trying to unscrew it. I have used a dremel to cut the ring that is on the muffler against the block off; but that didn't help either! All I have left now is about 2" of muffler lol.

How can I get this thing out of there??

The hacksaw idea sounds like a good method. Would an easy-out work without catching the threads in the block? Have you soaked it with PB Blaster or something similiar?

I have soaked it with every chemical I know of!

I don't know if an easy out will work, as it is a metal sleeve with threads on the outside. I think easy outs are for solid things... ?

I use a hack saw blade to reach in and cut muffler in two halfs and then a chisel to break the half out then make sure you clean the metal shavings out and chase the threads

Aaron, i've had this same problem lots of times.
sometimes the muffler would break off flush with the block then i would take an old center punch or straight
punch, and grind a slant on the end.
then place the slanted point between the pipe and the block and use a hammer to drive the pipe towards the center of the hole, this will collapse the pipe and you can remove it with your finger tips, but it's better to use needlenose pliers. fisher
