This is probably a gross over-simplification of this question, but here goes: If an antique tractor starts rather easily after sitting for a couple weeks or so (pops right off), does that mean that one can assume it has good compression? I look forward to any responses. Thank you.

If one finds that his engine runs OK and there is no remarkable loss of power, no elevated crank case pressure, no oil consumption, I believe that the nominal compression ratio is OK.
Well, easy starting (my opinion) is due to the tight fuel system from the fuel tank to the injection pump common fuel chamber. (in-line pumps, as well as rotary types)
The fuel check valve should keep the primary pressure in this chamber, otherwise you must crank quite long to establish this pressure for the pumping elements.
If this pressure remains steady for a couple of weeks, you can start your engine easily and you should forget about the question of compression ratio.

Jkc....with that senerio one can only assume it has enough compression to run... most any gas engine will run on 50 or 60 psi compression per cylinder. Nothing beats a wet and dry compression test spend a few minutes run the test then you will know for sure.

best wishes
