After Carb rebuild - a chuff and a puff of smoke

I got my WD45 running and it idles pretty good but seems to have a low lope at idle, where the rpm slows down and then returns to normal. Then there is a chuffing sound and a puff of smoke from the manifold (not the exhaust pipe - out the manifold on the side of the engine). I think there's also some gas seeping at the body gasket of the carb.

Does it mean the float needs to be adjusted (bent) up a little so the carb doesn't get so much gas? What's really the best setting for the main jet (the one at the top of the carb toward the front) for a basic setting? I'm afraid I've gotten it set too high and it's overfueling, but it's finally running.

Any insight would be a big help.

It kinda depends on the color of the smoke. As a rule of thumb: With your carburetor apart and holding the main body up so that the float is in the highest position with your float level, Judge or measure the distance on both ends of the float. Back where it pivots, and then the opposite end. It should be level with the gasket surface of the body pretty much all the way around.
