Im looking at a '72 454 gas thats for sale, the current owner bought the tractor from a golf course without checking it over very well, now wants to sell it. The three point hitch seems to work fine going down but raises very slowly and the pto will not engage at all. Linkages seem to be moving fine with very little slop. Is there a common component that could be causing both problems or are these seperate issues. Steering, brakes and trans seem to operate fine. I dont want to buy this if I will need to dump another $1000 into hydraulic repairs. Any help is appreciated

Check the multi-control valve, located just above the hydraulic filter case. Have someone shift the IPTO lever and see if it is actually lifting the valve fork. Sometimes the springs in this unit wear out, the linkage breaks or crud builds up in this area obstructing its proper function. IH rearend hydraulics are complex, and the multi-control valve could generate the problems you described. The complete valve assembly goes for about $150, I just bought one for my IH-484, which uses the same engine and a similar rearend as the IH-454.

Well I solved the problem with the three point, I found a piece of gasket sealer in the unloader valve, this didnt help the pto of course. What I have found with the pto is a lack of hydraulic pressure at the pto fitting (less than 100 psi). Cleaned and shimmed the relief, no change. I pulled the mcv and pump, checked all of the valves, only thing I found was that there is a check valve missing on the steering return line fitting at the mcv, looks as if someone may have either lost it trying to fix the problem or lost it causing the problem. As far as I can tell this fitting is what feeds the pto, am I correct? Is this likely my problem and where could I possibly find this part? Help!?

Case-IH still supports the IH-454. Ask your local parts man to make a copy of the parts sheet for the unit with the missing check valve. He can usually print it off the microfiche parts card. The IH service manual has detailed foldout diagrams illustrating the hydraulic flow paths for the rearend. They can be purchased from this site, the dealer or sometimes real cheap on eBay.

Good Luck!
