I have an old Perkins 6-354 engine, and I want to order a rebulid kit for this engine. I concider myself a "novice" mechanic, but I have never removed cyliderlinings before. How is it done?

Hope someone can help.

I did a 314 perkins from a massey 1085. Your best bet is to take it to a dealer and have them replace, it is a tricky job and new cylinders are very brittle and u have to hit it just right. As for knocking out with a hammer if they were wet sleeves that would work but not dry sleeves like u have. The welding trick would work if u r going to attempt it yourself.

Usually I take the engine block when all stripped down to like a NAPA and have them remove the old ones and install the new one cause if you happen to not get one seated all the way and leaks YOU have to redo. And if NAPA does it you can recoop alittle in tHe process($$).But Once you have the engine stripped you should be able to pound them out from the bottom. If not take an arc welder and make couple quick passes on cyl walls(opposite each other..max 4 passes)and sleeves will just about drop out and the new ones put in the freezer over nite and make sure the engine is in a warm shop(warm engine..cold cyl) and the new ones will just drop in and should just finish pushing them in with your hands. but one at a time(leave rest in freezer till needed) and quickly ..the colder(smaller when frozen) they are the easyer they install..!!..good luck

There are tools made just to do this job.Usualy consist of a long heavyduty redy rod with heavy washers and a bridge or bar to go across the top.Prekins sleves are sometimes very tight.
