Has anyone tried successfully to replace old implement wood bearings with any type of "oil impregnated cast nylon" or "ultra high molecular weight" Polyethylene type materials"?

I'm rebuilding a 10'disk that had Wood bearings, 3" OD with 2" ID. Looking through the McMaster-Carr catalog I found these materials available in tubes the exact size I need.

The Nylon has good tensile strength, good impact strength, and a 450F melting point, for indoor or outdoor use.

The Polyethelene has poor tensile strength, excellent Impact strength, and a 275F melting point, for indoor use.

Any thoughts or experiences????? ?

If they have the right sizes for you you might try one of the plastics called Delrin. I believe it's also called by another name that I can't remember off the top of my head what it is. It's the same stuff they use for king pin bushings in alot of the bigger trucks. I had a couple of bronze bushings that I couldn't get any life out of because of the dirty conditions they ran in that I replaced with this stuff. So far I've gotten twice the life and no appreciable signs of them wearing out.

Hi Doug
No Problem, Ive done it several times on various older things. Check with your local plastics supplier for various types from cheap to Linear
Teflon type stuff for harsher usage. My buddy and I sleave old push mower wheels with PVC pipe for low use trim push mowers , Works great
E-mail me if you have specific questions
