Can anyone out there give me some ideas on removing the sector gear from a Farmall H.? The book shows the separated parts and the nut on top is loose but I cant get the steering rod and the bottom bolster to come down and out. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated, Thanks for any help.

Hi TDK, Thanks for the quick response, looks like the heat wrench then, as that shaft is not coming by the usual methods. The best part is that now I know I'm on the right track.Dick

Remove steering shaft at coupling(u-joint)in front of guage panel. Remove big nut(bearing retainer)on front of bolster.Shaft & bearing can then be screwed out of bolster towards front of tractor.Raise front of tractor about 1-2 in. off ground, back sector gear nut off about 1 or 2 turns. Now with the weight of bolster, tires, wheels, etc. pulling down on bolster shaft use a block of wood and a big hammer and strike nut/shaft. If shaft refuses to slide out of gear you can use heat provided all grease has been cleaned out of housing. This worked on my M. Also if gear is a full gear, NOT a half gear, mark the side that worm gear has been running on and turn sector gear 180 degrees when reinstalling. This will probably help take out any slack taht may have been in steering.
