I have an International Model M 3hp Stationary Engine which is stuck solid. My thoughts were to remove the magneto then soak in an electrolysis bath for a couple of days to loosen the bolts & piston etc. Is this a good idea or an extremely bad one?
Cheers Brad

Sounds like a good idea to me. Can you keep the crank, rod, and cam bearings out of the bath? There seems to be an ongoing argument about whether there is any risk of damage to babbitt, or not, and that would avoid taking the chance.

not sue about the babbit but I can tell you I used Electrolysis on a 1500 year old roman coin made of either copper or bronze without ill effects to the metal (cleaned it up real nice too)
I have noticed that polished metal surfaces come out looking cloudy or dull. This was on the bearing shaft of an IH water pump.

I had astuck piston in a Briggs 12 h.p. I removed the cylinder head, and poured some PB Blaster into it. let it set overnight, and with a bit of careful hammering with a 1/2 in square stick an hammer, it finally came loose! Others have suggested soaking it with turpentine, if you can find any! Rusty Jones

Electrolysis won't hurt babbit. I soaked a 1hp famous to remove rust and paint, it came out fine.

On another old engine forum it has been posted that not all babbitt is the same metallurgical composition, and there was a chance certain types may be affected, so I feel that it is better to be safe.
