Have any of you welders or repairmen welded up a leaky air tank? Is it possible to safely repair these tanks? Thanks for any information you can give.

This isn't about repair but is a lesson to be learned for all of us: A few years back a fellow in town needed to blow out the water lines in his RV. So he bought a 5 gal. portable air tank but...he didn't own a compressor so he headed on down to one of the local tire shops to fill up the tank which was rated for 115psi. While he was hunched over the tank and filling it with air the tank reached 'critical mass' and exploded...killing him instantly. His young son, fortunately, was behind him at a distance and so escaped with 'only' emotional trauma. The tire shops' compressor was set at 175psi and he probably never even had second thoughts about it even IF he read the warning on the tank..... ...don't weld it..... it's time for a new one.

Buy new!!!!! A fella down the road tried using an old propane tank as an airpig. He was lucky. He only lost alot of blood and the side of his face when the tank exploded! This happened just a few months ago. So get a nice ,shiny, and NEW tank immediately. Take care.

I agree, don't try it. But for those who are going to try it anyways, at least do a hydrostatic test when you're done. Fill it with water right up to the brim, put a guage and zerk fitting on it and pressurize it with a grease gun to at least 5 times the working pressure.

Hi Frank,

My own answers to your questions are NO and NO. Compressed air storage tanks are usually (hopefully) ASME coded vessels that are designed, manufactured and inspected to exacting standards. While certain repair work is potentially possible, it generally is highly regulated and, if done properly by certified workers and inpsectors, is quite expensive and can easily exceed the cost of a new replacement. This is no job to be undertaken lightly. Pressure vessel repair is usally reserved for only the most important and costly vessels...and even then, may be decided against for safety reasons.

An air tank is an explosion waiting to happen. That's why all (most?) states require periodic professional safety inspection and certification of air tanks in commercial facilities. Do yourself a big favor regarding safety and junk any such leaky tank. It's not worth trying to fix.
