Saw the question about fixing a hammer handle, thought I would ask about a shovel handle. When repalcing a shovel handle, does the grain of the wooden handle go across the shovel (horizontally)or does the grain go vertically?

Go to your local Sears store and buy Craftsman brand shovels. When you break the handle, just take it back. Its covered under the Lifetime Craftsman warranty.

And to add to this I always carefully inspect any wooden handled tool I purchase and choose the tightest grained, clearest I can find, the difference in a pile of tools will amaze you.

I would say vertical- think of them as little boards on edge, rather than laying flat and breaking easily.

Yes, JMS speaks truth. If you don't believe it, lay a 2x6 (steel or wood) on it's long side (6" horizontal)hanging from 2 supports some distance apart. Measure the droop (sag). Turn it up on it's side(short dimension..1.5" horiz, 6" vertical) and measure it again (what droop?). Same thing applies to grain on shovel and plies on plywood.

Sickem Phydeaux...geez that's coonass, I'm Texan ....Fido.

Have a fun filled great day.

Best,

txblu
