You may need an overrun clutch. It is a device that slips over your pto shaft and locks by driving a roll pin thru it and the hole in the pto shaft. About $70 at farm store or local NH dealer.

Since the pto and drive gears are locked together on that tractor (and old Fords) when the load is spinning faster than the engine, the load keeps pressure on the gears and they will not slide to the new position.

The overrun clutch allows the load to spin and the pto shaft to stop allowing you to shift. Also keeps load from driving your tractor over a cliff, into the side of a building, or into a fence.
