I have a 1947 JD Model "M" tractor that I am restoring. I have the tractor on blocks, rims off, transmission in gear, and when I spin the hubs, I get no resistance within my drive train. Meaning, my engine does not turn, and my hubs turn freely. I would think that at least my engine would try to turn....like if it was engaged. Now, I am not even able to turn my engine over by hand with the hand crank, while transmission is not in gear. Is there something that has snapped, that will not allow me to at least put this tractor in gear, and try to turn the engine over??? I have run this tractor for about a total of twenty hours 4 years ago. I'll find the problem..... just wanted some ideas. I have had a can over the muffler, I filled the cylinders full of oil to see if they will free up if they are froze before I start to look for a mechanical problem. Thank you for your time.

I agree with cole .If the tracter has a rear end differential the oppisite hub would just spin in the opisit direction with out engaging drive line.

Okay.....that's what happens. With break on, I have nothing. So, I guess it is froze up. Hope to free it after I put the oil in the cylinders. Thanks for the info. I have learned something today. I'll let you how it turns out. Always looking for some info....I'm new to this. Donald

Try locking one brake then turn it and see what happens.

If you lock up one rear hub with the brake, then turning the other hub will (should) try to turn the engine, if the transmission is in gear. The fact that the rear hubs turn in opposite directions to each other is how a differential works, with the weight off the wheels and they are free to turn! With one hub locked, if you try to turn the other hub in a forward motion it will try to turn the tranny, and then the engine, thru the drive train! Some previous posts have given suggestions on how to get an engine "unstuck" short of a complete tear-down! Go back thru the previous posts, of a few months ago--there are posts in here that give good advice for your problem, as to what to pour into the cylinders to help get it unstuck! Rusty Jones
