Devcon makes many difrerent epoxies that might possibly work for you. I first used Devcon while in the Navy where it was used for piping repairs where other means weren't feasible due to the material the pipe was made of, it's location, etc. I repaired a crack along almost the whole external length of the water jacket on a 4219 Deere block with one of their Epoxies almost 5 years ago and it is still holding tight. Call Devcon and get their recomendation for which epoxy to use in your particular situation, that's the only sure way to get the right stuff. To repair, drill a hole at each end of the crack with a small bit, like maybe 1/8, to keep it from running. The V it out and spread your epoxy and let it dry and you should be good to go. Good luck.

I use sodium silicate (aka: water glass) to seal cracks in the water jacket. I first drain the system completely then add a gallon or so of plain water then 3 to 4 ounces of water glass and top off the radiator to overflowing. I take the tractor or whatever out and work it until the temperature gets to normal. If it's in the summer I will leave it that way and just use the tractor normally until the leak stops, then I will drain the system and refill with 50/50 antifreeze/water mix. If it's winter I will run the tractor until the leak stops or put it in the shop and repeat running it the next day and so on until the crack is sealed, then replace the water with the antifreeze mix. The reason I keep the radiator as full as possible is the water glass hardens when air reaches it . So, to avoid any internal radiator/ hose problems keep the system 'topped off". I sealed a 4 -5 in. crack on a VAC Case about 10 years ago and it just started seeping again awhile back; I added 3 oz. of w. glass and it's sealed again without going thru the plain water routine. Just added it to the radiator and topped it off with antifreeze.

Excellent.

Yesterday I was putting my fuel tank back on when I noticed water/freeze on top of the head adjacent to the valve cover. Hmmmm hadn't run the engine, been working with fuel, not water/freeze, what's up? Investigation revealed a hairline crack emanating from the edge of a weld where previous owner attempted to weld crack.

So, where do you buy water glass? And, if yours worked with freeze in, on your reseal, why wouldn't it work in mine?

Thanks,

Mark

That's a pretty generic question, without knowing the make, or perhaps seeing a picture of the damage.

However, I will say that JB weld often does make a long lasting water jacket repair.

For best results, lay the block on it's side, with the crack facing up, and make sure the water jacket is as dry as possible. Use spray carburetor cleaner to clean away all oil and crud. (Read the "saftey" label on the can), and allow the carb cleaner to evaporate. Use a small grinder, and "VEE" out the crack a bit, to expose shiny, clean metal. Clean well, and apply the epoxy, allowing it to dry THOROUGHLY.

I like PC-7 better than JB Weld. HWI Hardware carries it.

Would you share the "why" with us?

And never heard of HWI. Is that like ACE? Have ACE locally.

Thanks,

txblu
