I have a 6-volt system with the cut out system(not regulator) and was wondering if the same thing can happen in the cut out as the regulator if the battery is hooked up with the wrong polarity (ie the points can get welded together). I have a tractor that I wired up wrong the first time (without realizing it). By that I mean it was supposed to be positive grnd and I had it wired as negative grnd. By the way I have it wired correctly now.

Dave - Answer is yes. A regulator is simply a cutout relay, plus a second relay (sometimes two relays) to automatically control generator output.

Operating tip: When shutting down the tractor always watch the ammeter as the engine coasts to a stop. The needle should briefly indicate discharge, then "pop" back to 0 as the cutout relay opens.

However if the cutout sticks closed, the ammeter will continue to show several amps of discharge after everything stops.

the point opens when the generator voltage is less than the battery voltage. open when motor is off, closed when running and you want charge. if the point is welded, you will discharge battery when not running. remove the cover and inpsect- sand point with small file or sandpaper.
