Two of my pistons in my 1957 case 310 have a piece of the piston chipped out on the top of the piston head about the size of a pea, just from where the valves were caked with hard carbon deposits after years of use. Do they need replacing?, Im on a budget and dont want to tear the engine down unless I have too. Any help would be grreatly appreciated.

Good question.

Gas or diesel. Diesel would be more of a concern.

Look under where the dings are and see how much piston material is there. Turn the piston upside down and measure down from the skirt to the underneath side and then measure from the skirt to the surface the piston is sitting on. The difference is your thickness. If it is at least half as thick as the adjacent material, I wouldn't worry about it. Maybe you lucked out and they are over a stiffner.

Cast aluminum ought to be good for 20,000 psi and the engine develops pressure in the order of hundeds of PSI.

You know, some high performance engines with very high compression ratio's have dimples in the crown of the piston for the valve clearance. Don't know how thick the casting is in this case.
