I just got a used belarus 520A with a front end loader and 4WD. it runs strong but it has a steering problem IE: steers fine then theres a poping sound from the steer column and the steering wheel will spin free and the tires wont turn. I put it in reverse and back up a few feet and the steering wheel binds up and it pops again and then it steers fine for a short while then it does it again. was looking for some input before I start taking it apart. Please no USSR bashing its what I can afford at this time thanks....

Strange connection when you say that to obtain "steering" you must go in reverse??
On a 420A the steering is a hyd assist angle unit mounted in front/above the engine, maybe your 520 has a similiar unit and the worm gear is becoming un-attached from the the matching gear? Not 100% on the 520 arrangment, but what maybe worth looking into is: When the noise happens and steering stops is the noise maybe coming from the fwd drive having loose bearings/tooth missing, and jumping it position or locking up. When you back up it goes back into place and all is normal. So when it is locked up[fwd gear] the steering system does not have enough power to turn the steering[worn assist unit?] and it spins "freely" or seems to, may actually be in a bypass condition. If possible at the time it locks up can the front axle be lifted and the front wheel be turned by hand? or is there resistance? also can the steering now turn the wheels with the ground friction removed?
The power steering unit will draw 3+/- gal per min of flow to operate out of i think your 9 gal pump per min system to run the tractor.
E-mail Belarus.ca for a list of on line dealers or a tech expert at the distributors office in Canada These machine are also sold by "Northern Tools" as the "northern" tractor, They changed the name/model #, not sure they handle the larger units as yours, think they had an equal to the 420/420A[57 hp]
Good luck hope it helped?

thanks phil, its not the worm drive the steering shaft is poping off the steering tower, dealer says it might be lose bolts or crack in castiron bracket the tower is mounted on. did find several lose bolts but have to degrease entire area to look for a crack. the tower pulls away from the steering shaft when the frount wheels go over uneaven ground, hopefuly just tightning the bolts will fix. the popping sound was the shaft popping off and on, the tower went back to original posistion when i backed up off mound or hole. if there is a crack in the bracket i should be able to weld it with some reenforcment to help hold it. but as yet the crack has eluded me, hence the degreaseing it leaks more thm my HD LOL LOL. got to get metric tools too, my wife says i just want more tools HA HA. thanks again il keep you posted to my progress or setbacks

Good that it was found, it was hard to cipher the connection with steering and direction of travel.i have had to tighten bolts also, it is a good idea to install new lock washers or at least star washers when it is re-secured, the old ones have been lost their locking abilites by now.
A trick in not buying new metrics is to remove a bolt and match it to the almost correct size socket. and then file off each side of the bolt to fit said socket. Takes a little manual labour but if a person has time it saves buying a socket that is only used once a year or more.It doesn't take much filing off each side either but file as straight as possible for proper grip, a milling machine does wonders in getting the right amount and flat surface on re-sizing the bolt head, only talking thiusands of an inch per bolt flat.
Or delete this message and tell her the forum guys also say you got the have metric tools:)
have fun

LOL phil, like the tool idea. stil havent found a crack in the bracket and tightning the bolts didnt work, so im gonna have the short part of the steer shaft remade 1/2" longer so it will stay in place when the steer tower moves so I can use the tractor. hopefuly this will stop the problem til the true source shows itself and can be remedied corectly. you have a belarus also? if so does yours leak every fluid or are all my seals bad, I heard that this is a persistant prob with them. I am amazed now that im under the hood how much everything has leaked, nothing will ever rust on mine LOL. I will keep you updated as to my findings.

A thing you might enjoy doing is re-tapping those bolt holes, and away you go? sounds as if they are stripped if the orginals don't tighten up. Be a shame to spend your time taking things apart now for the new shaft and then doing it a second time to re-install orginal.Again a chance to convert to an amercian size bolt, which will be so close in size so that only a little material will need removing if any? re-tap with a fine thread tap if possible, less material removed results in greater torque can be applied when tightening, torque for the bolt size/bolt strength that you use.
The only leak that makes a mess on the 420A is one valve cover, takes a year to seep enough that i really must wipe it off, probably a warped cover/gasket, nothing serious. So actually it is a tight machine not withholding that the 3 point hyd cylinder ram is wearing the seal, and new one is ready but i needs time to replace it, hope to remove the ever so slight bend in ram shaft to cure the situation.
You should be squared away now and have better luck.
