Generator quit ginning and the guy at the generator shop said the gen itself was OK and suggested I take a look at the "cutout switch located on the firewall. I took it off and looked at the points inside. they looked pretty worn but I uased a small points file and smoothed them up, reassembled everything but when I hooked up the battery there was a dead short. My question is, did I hook something up backasswards or are the points just stuck? Any help to this rookie is greatly appreciated.

Did you hook it up the same way as it was? The terminals will be labeled "GEN" and "BATT".

If you hooked it up backwards, it will pull shut, and act like the system is shorted, or if you hooked it up right, the damaged points you filed may have just stuck.

Of course I thought I hooked it up the way it was but the fact that it had a dead short when I replaced the battery cable now has me wondering, therefore the question. I believe the part that is there is original and the terminals are not marked in any way. I sure wish I had a picture before I put a new cutoff on it. Thanks for the reply.
