Hello everybody. I have an older motorcycle that has a crack in the crank case cover. The cover is made of Magnesium. Over the past few years I've just put RTV sealant on it to keep oil from leaking out of it, and believe it or not it has worked very well. Thing is, I'd like to get it fixed right. I have every type of welding machine at my disposal, but I've never welded on Magnesium. I've heard it can be dangerous, and at the same time, I've heard of people that do it quite frequently. Is it possible that I can just braze this piece? I know the characteristics are like aluminum, so I doubts I would be able to do that.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Branden,

The thing about mag is that it will burn....and water will not extinguish it either. I would use the JB Weld as well. It will work as good as any weld job if we're not talking a high stress area(torque or shear).

all my former experiences with trying to weld magnesium with a tig welder usually ended with a greenish blue flame as the piece went up in flames. The safest way for you to stop the leak will probably be to clean it, and remove all traces of oil and grease that have soaked into the pores of the metal, then vee the crack out and use some epoxy compound like J-B weld and smooth it down and go from there. That's not a bad idea there Gene. I have a feeling that when it's all said and done, that is probably what I'll end up doing.
