I'm interested in a 9N but it needs a ring gear. I'm new to this tractor stuff and don't really know what it is. Can someone tell me what it is, if it's expensive to replace and how difficult it is. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If it is the ring gear in the differential there is the possibility that the pinion is also bad. If so new ring gears are available but are pretty pricey. Pinions are not available new from what I found. There are several used dealers who have plenty of parts though. If you do have to replace the rear ring gear it can be a chore. You have to split it at the rear of the tranny and also remove the left axle housing to gain access as well as removing the hydraulic pump. All in all not really that difficult just time consuming.

Is the ring gear for the flywheel or the differential?

The ring gear is heated and placed on the flywheel, after it cools it shrinks and is held by the tight fit. You can do this yourself, but if you don't get it on straight you will have problems. I would recommend taking to the dealer, you have to buy the ring gear and it is worth the small amount for labor. Now the fun part. You have to split the tractor at the engine. When you put it back together you have to alien the clutch but it is not bad of a job. Just take your time.
