Once we get the tractor started it idles fine for about 25 seconds before it starts to sputter and before it finally dies. If anyone has any information on why it is doing this and how fix it, I would greatly appreciate it.

Deere made 2 #60's, a big "Popp'in Johnny", and a little lawn tractor. Which one ya got?

In either case, it sounds like you have restricted fuel flow from the gas tank to the carburetor. Probably dirt in fitting in tank bottom, dirt in the sediment bowl or fuel shutoff, or dirt in the inlet fitting on the carburetor, or in the carb inlet needle and seat.

It is a 1956 model. Thank you Bob I will have to see, and I had just bought a new fuel line from the bowl to the carb.
