I added a thin washer behind the spring inside the oil pump of my JD 40 to increase the oil pressure. It worked very well, increasing the pressure from about 18 to 38 lbs. on the new motor. I am concerned whether this pressure is too high.

My 4010 runs 30 psig because it has a limiter valve in it. My Ford's all run 50 to 70 cold at PTO RPM.

What do the manufacturer's spec's call for on this engine?
Did you take the reading with a calibrated gauge or with the tractor's gauge?
If this is a new motor and it only got 18# to begin with, I'd be a little worried. What parts are new? The bearings? The oil pump? Apparently not the relief valve spring. Did you measure the spring to be sure it still had the correct length? Lots of things to consider, but probably not that the oil pressure is too high at 38#
