Just hoping that someone can help figure out the problem with our tractor. It's a 1956 202MF 4 Cycle Continital. When we try to start it, it gives off blue smoke. It has not been burning any oil but does this everytime. Any suggustions on what's wrong?

These (If F163 or F162) had problems with valve seals. Hastings has a modification but is quite a chore to do.

Thank You for your reply! Recently we have had a 9 hour engine job done by a local automotive machanic, replacing the seals. It is, however, very possible (maybe) that the machanic didn't change the valve seals or used the wrong ones. He has been telling us that the problem is most likely the carborator. Could this be the cause or should we still look into the value seals? Any suggustions?

Thanks

I worked for a machine shop and it just so happens we where a continital dealer blue smoke is caused from oil valve seals are most likely the problem black smoke is caused by gas i dont know about any updates on something that old we always improvised in this case with some other seal if it only smokes on start up i wouldn't wory about it sometime on the older engines youll never get it to stop if you put other seal on the valves it may stop but then it will ware out the vavle quikly and some smoke is better then rebuilding the head and having to buy all new valves and guides the next rebuild would be more costly in the long run please e-mail me if you have any other questions hope i helped

Thank You muchly for replying Jason.

Our tractor is giving off lots of blue smoke and reduces power. Our local "shady tree" tractor machanic did an engine job placing new rings, new valves, plainning its head, etc.

As soon as we got it back, it gave off more blue smoke than when we started. This tractor gets very light work loads here around our garden center. It has only had around 25 hours of use since the motor job and has burnt over 1 litre of oil already.

Come to find out, he did not put in new valve guides. Will new guides clean up the blue smoke problem?

Thanks for all your help.
