My friend would like me to replace the brakes on his 9N, I do have experance working on tractors, but not on Ford. How hard of of a job is it going to be and are there any tricks that I should be aware of?

I have done this on my 2N (essentially the same tractor) and there is definately a right and a wrong way to do things. Unfortunately, you'll have to pull the axles out to do the brakes as the shoes are attached to the backing plate which will more than likely come off with the axle and drum.

You'll want to pull the axles out anyway in order to install something called a "sure-seal". The axle seal on the 9N and 2N was kinda weak and had a bad tendancy to leak and brake shoes + tranny fluid don't mix. Contaminated brake shoes can't be satisfactorily cleaned, so go ahead and replace them ($70 for all 4). Pay attention to how the springs go on there as they are slightly different on each side.

Basically, reinstallation proceedure is covered in this article I wrote several months ago. Also, when installing hte sure seals, DEFINATELY grind a nice big bevel on the larger open end so that it will properly seat itself in the bearing housing. If you don't grind the bevel on it, you'll never get it to go on straight and you'll pull your hair out in frustration. Email me if you run into any more problems.
