90 weight GL-1 gear oil (NOT GL-5) is about as close to the old mineral oil as you're gonna find nowadays. New Holland now recommends Ford spec "134" hydraulic oil. Many "universal tractor fluids" meet this Ford (New Holland) spec. Advantages of the 90 gear oil:
Better hydraulic performance with slower leak-down of the 3-point hitch, especially in hot weather. Quieter hydraulic pump operation. Less chance of leakage at axle and tranmission input shaft seals. Advantages of the "universal tractor fluid" "134" type oil:
Better hydraulic system performance in bitter cold weather. You should be able to purchase either oil in a 5-gallon container for between $20.00 and $30.00. I's up to you which one you use!
The owner's manual calls for 5 gallons, but 4.5 gallons is usually enough, 'cause there's always some crud left in the bottom when you drain the oil. A lot of people remove the bottom bolt on the RH side cover where the dipstick is, and add oil until it begins to leak out the bolthole, and then stop, put the bolt back in, and make a mental note of the oil level on the dipstick at that point, for future referance. It's better to be SLIGHTLY below full than overfull, to make oil leakage into the brakes less likely.
