I decided to replace the clutch fork assembly and pulley brake since the everything was so worn the brake just kind of hung there real sloppy. So, I bought an assembly from e-bay (clutch fork and pulley brake) that was in much better shape than mine. Well the old one came out easy enough and there doesn't seem to be any magic to installing the new one. Problem now is, I can't for the life of me, adjust the clutch to engage or disengage. I know it is engaged because when I start it the belt pulley is turning. (And the service manual doesn't say there are any tricks in installing the assembly.) I thought maybe because the old one was so worn the clutch may have been adjusted very tight. That was not it. Backing off the 3 adjusting nuts less than a full turn was to loose. I even tried to put the old one back in and that doesn't work either. I'm afraid to break something because no matter how hard I push on the clutch lever it won't snap in. HELP!!! What am I doing wrong???

Are you sure you have the exact correct, matching parts, BY PART NUMBER?

Obviously, you've successfully installed the brass yoke into the groove in the clutch operating
sleeve, and the splines on the shaft are correctly matched with the fork?

Bob,
Yes...part numbers match. And yes the brass yolk slides in fine over the slot. (When you look into the assembly the are acutally 2 slots and it won't go in on the one on the left.)You must be onto something...how would I know if the splines are matched with the fork. I see nothing in the service manual on how to match them up.
Thank you. Marty

Marty, My name is Andy Kavanaugh. I am 19 years old and am restoring a 1951 John Deere B. I had the same similar problem you did. I was pounding my rivets out of the clutch brake so I could put a new one on and when I would start my tractor the flywheel pulley would turn along with it. I tried to disengage it and it would pull the whole tractor down, it wouldn't try to disengage. There is a bolt on the clutch engage lever, it acts as a stop for something, i screwed it in a couple of turns and that did the trick. Hope this helps.
