Folks, I have been scouring this website looking for information on tractor cleaning and have read lots of postings on the subject. I have a Ford 6600 Diesel that Runs perfectly and needs nothing except painting the sheetmetal and chassis/wheels.
After what I've read on sandblasting that is NOT an option. I really do not want to disassemble anything as nothing leaks and all fittings are tight. I do plan to remove the sheet metal and have this blasted primed and painted OFF the tractor. What do you recommend for cleaning the castings and all parts as they are without ruining them. I have looked at the "LYE GRAVY" but this too seems very caustic. I have already powerwashed the tractor but a filmy residue remains. Thanks for any suggestions DL

"Clear Magic", available at most big home centers. Spray it on, wait a bit, hose off with COLD water. All grease and film are gone.

Get a gallon of metal prep and give the tractor a good scrub with it.If you are just wanting to make the tractor look nice, sand the sheet metal with 220 grit paper until it feels smooth when wiping your fingers across the metal. If it doesn't feel smooth then the paint won't be smooth.I have painted dozens of tractors without priming and they have looked nice for years after.(The boss was to tight to let me prime coat them.)If you don't want any swirl marks from sanding, shoot it with primer/surfacer and then lightly sand that.Go over the tractor again with the prep just before shooting the paint to remove any oil on the metal surface from your hands

If you have a powerwasher, try using some or all HOT water in it. It helps to get grease off, so if all you have now is a filmy residue, it might do the trick. Otherwise steam cleaning.
