First time out with a new grease gun and I broke off a fitting on my sickle bar mower - it appears that about half of the threading came out. Any thoughts at to what I can/should do about this? There is not enough thread to screw it back in.... how can I get the rest of it out?

Thanks

You're not going to get very far with a drill. Those zerk fittings are real hard. A carbide drill won't work either because there is already a hole that you're trying to enlarge. The carbide will just catch and shatter. I don't know about an easy out. The fitting is a pipe thread and tapered. That means it's likely in there real tight.
Sorry to only be able to give you the bad news. I'll be interested to hear an idea that works.

Most auto supply or similar stores will have a grease fitting tool. A little 4 way that has the proper ez out, a thread chaser, and a couple of sockets for reinstalling. Should be in every toolbox right next to the grease gun.

Left-handed drill bit, works like a charm.

Hello EWB,
You may want to try to get an EZ out and see if it will come out. If not, you may want to try a drill. If I remember correctly, a 1/4" pipe plug is what is needed in order to tap the hole for the threads to insert a grease fitting.

later days mate,
Jim

drill it out. My rememberance of sickle mowers is that you are lubricating bushings, not ball bearings. Since bushings are very close toleranced, your drilling chips (that you don't dig out when finished) should be too large to be a problem. Even if one did "scratch" a journal, so what? Just keep the pressure up and speed down and your shavings will be large and easily removed.
