Anybody have any good ideas on how to clean out an old gas tank? Has minimal rust and a little dirt. I was going to throw some stones in there and slosh them around with some kero to knock off any loose rust. But i heard that wasnt a good idea. Any good suggestions?

Jolly

I used Kreem on my motorcycle and Super A. I sloshed around nuts, bolts, chain like others suggested for a while first. When you get ready for the coating stage, put a piece of plastic wrap over the filler opening and then put on the cas cap. The plastic wrap will keep the coating from gluing the gas cap in place. I was pleased with the results.

The inside of gas tanks is coated with "terne metal". It's lead/tin I believe and very soft. Any abrasive method will remove the coating and destroy the tank. Sure, it will be clean but without the terne metal coating any moisture in the fuel will quickly cause penetrating rust.

Do what Geroege said or go to most any radiator shop. They use the same process and will safely remove the rust you now have and then coat the inside of the tank with a sealer. It's a lifetime repair. Around here it's $60 or so.

Go to a motorcycle shop and get a gas tank cleaning and sealing kit. Probably cost $25 and will do probably one 20-gallon tank or four 2-gallon tanks.

Throw some grit inside. Tarp-strap it to a tractor wheel. Drive around for a day or so. (Bring beer!). Clean tank and reinstall.

Just cleaned a tank today that had 11 yrs of crud in it. I used rubbing alcohol and a jarfull of short wood screws, shook it several times in following days. Today poured the mess out and put in another bottle of alcohol shook several times and drained. The screws were removed with a magnet leaving the tank like new inside. On most tanks using rocks and stones leave unremovable trash. Up to you
