I recently purchased a 1946 A John Deere to restore. Serial no. 556707. The rear axle housing has JOHN DEERE cast into the left and right housings. As a kid, I remember the 46 we had was a smooth rear axle. Atop the housing below the seat is a stainless steele plate with the no. PL 114980. Can anybody tell me why the difference?

The raised Deere lettering came and went with various serial numbers. I know I've got specific info on that in a book somewhere, but can't put my finger on it at the moment! (Maybe someone swapped rear ends on your A?)

The number plate is the serial number of the Power-Trol valve. I believe these sometimes got swapped around a bit from what they left the factory with.
