I broke a bolt in the water neck where the thermostat goes. Well now I drilled it out "somewhat" but not deep enough to tap yet. Can that be drilled and tapped since it's cast? I think now that I'm drilling it with a 5/16" bit I would have to tap it with a 3/8" tap? I may have to have it helicolied??? Don't know what to do now??? HELP! Thanks Steve.

What I have done in situations like that is go ahead and drill all the way through the bolt and then grind a hacksaw blade down so it will fit the hole.Saw clear through both sides and then remove the two halves.Use plenty of Never Seeze on the new bolt.Sometimes you can saw just one side and collapse the bolt with a punch and hammer. The really easy way is to weld a nut on the next bolt that twists off.I have never had that approach to fail.
