Nicholaus,

The rod is cast iron in stick form , usually use 3 /16 or 1/4 inch , it is usually square but some brands are round . Two brands that I have here are harris- welco kast weld 111 and the other is from tucker valve seat co in odessa tx . welco has a very good flux to go with the rod , flux is a must have , can't weld without it. I'll send you an email also.

George, I take it you are in the business of welding. I have a distillate manifold that I took to a "professional" weld shop. They should be embarassed for the cobbled mess they created and I should be shot for paying them. Can you send me an email with your contact information? Geoff Gauger

George, ever here of this for welding cast? It was a little article in an old farm magazine from the 30's that my friend picked up somewhere. The article says you can torch-weld cast by making your own welding rods using old (clean) piston ring segments with thin copper wire wrapped around the segments of piston ring. Don't remember what the article said the copper did (whether it acted as a flux or for some other reason). Sort of interesting and was wondering if you've ever used it or heard of it?

Mike,

Yes , I have heard of the piston ring and copper but I have never tried it . Back then rings were
all cast , now many of top the are moly , chrome , or
chrome faced . The material sheet for the cast rod says it has .01% copper in it . I'm not sure what purpose the wire would serve. george

Grind it clean and you can weld it with brass.

Little dave ,

Brass is way better than arc weld , but NO

where near as good as oxy/acet cast iron weld.

Link below , a necessary read if you weld cast,

about 3 or 4 pages . If you read carefully you

will notice that he says arc is the worst choice.
