Cylinder Hone question?

How long do I run a cylinder hone for? I am restoring a 1935 Farmall F-12. There is a slight ridge in the cylinder but a mechanic friend of mine said it was too small to use a ridge reamer, and I would risk scoring the side of the cylinder with the reamer. I ran a hone for about 20 seconds and it seems to have roughed up the surface. Do you normally do it longer than 20 seconds? Also, there is still a ridge present, should I try to run the reamer until the ridge is gone? But I imagine I would have to run the reamer for at least a few minutes to remove the ridge. Help!

If you can feel a ridge, then you should use a ridge reamer. The hone prepares the cylinder to seat new rings. It is not intended to remove ridges. Normally, you make not more than 10 trips down and up the cylinder with a hone at slow to moderate drill speed. This will leave a very symmetrical cross-hatched pattern on the cylinder wall. Some day I hope to come across one of those old F models at the right price. In my view they are "The Classic American Farm Tractor."
Good luck with your restoration, Jim

Hones are just used to break the glaze and give oil a place to catch in the cylinder, I don't think there were designed to remove major carbon rings. If the ridge reamer is used correctly it wont hurt the cylinder. JMHO

I ran mine for up to 1 minute per hole once, wore the stones down a lot...I think back to that day and think I did it too much....just get a nice crosshatch to remove the glaze....I had some pitting and it fixed it pretty well...
