I would like to replace my ailing HH60 Tecumseh engine with a B&S or Kohler. This is for a 1973 vintage Troy bilt Horse I model tiller that I am rebuilding over the winter. What would you suggest?
Thanks in advance for your help,
Eric

ERIC I have rebuilt several troybilts and have put different motors on then and I have had great luck with the briggs 7 hp intec or the HM 80 tecumseh 8hp just make sure that they have 3/4 shafts and tecumsehs turn this 8 hp just for troybilts and also try www.smallenginewarehouse.com they ship to door and always have something on sale. And while your at it check motor mount slide holes for wear if real egg shaped replace will make a world of differance during operation. the machine you have is an 2 speed and is built better than any newer 4 speed ,and make sure you keep gear box full will last for rest of your life good luck.

It's an easy swap with the Briggs, Koehler, Honda, Wisconsin, etc. But, unlike the cheaper H series, the HH series was one of the better built Tecumsehs. Cast iron block, tapered ball bearing on both sides of the crank, etc. If it was mine, I'd fix it and use it. I've got a couple of them that I've had for 30 plus years and they work/start just fine.

I'd go with the koler butter engine in my book. Did the same thing years ago on the troy we have, that koler is still running after about 15-20 years.

I have a Troy Bilt Horse that I got new about 30 years ago that came with a 7 HP Kohler and it still runs like new. It almost always starts on the first pull. Very good engine.

Hi Eric,

I've been looking into chainsaws this past week. To meet EPA regulations, I'm seeing alot of non-justable componets on the new engines along with plastic crank cases.

There's a few left out there that still have quality but it's really tuff to tell which to choose from and it's spendy when you find them.

I just bought a new chipper/shredder with a 6.5hp Brigs and it starts great even tho it's flywheel heavy. Heaven help me if it ever refuses to start as I would have to build a starter adapter to fit my 1/2" drill motor.

Have you considered rebuilding what you have?
