On my JD H I would like to remove the serial number plate before it goes to the hot tank, these brads are so hard a center punch won't touch them, I know I can knock the heads off but I still need to drill them out to replace the tag with new brads.
An suggestions would be appericated.

They are probably escutchion pins. If so they have coarse spiral threads. Use a thin cutoff wheel to slot them, then back them out with a screwdriver. You might need an impact driver to get them started.

Walter, I always remove these when doing a restore so I can clean the tag up good and paint behind it. I slot the head of the brad with a dremel tool and use a screwdriver to back it out just like a screw. Replacement brads are available from your JD dealer. You are right, I don"t know what these things are made of but they are dang near impossible to drill out.

Sometimes it is easier to drill new holes right next to the old holes. The plate will cover them if done right.I usually use a small sharp chisel and drive it under two sides a litle bit at a time.If you can get them to move, they are pretty easy to pull with a very very small nail puller.
